An e-Invoice, or electronic invoice, is a digital document that is structured in a machine-readable format and submitted directly to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) for tax compliance purposes. Unlike traditional invoice formats such as PDF, Excel, or Word, which are considered digital invoices and used mainly for human viewing or internal records, an e-Invoice must be generated in XML or JSON format. These formats allow for automated data processing and validation by LHDN’s system, ensuring accuracy and compliance. To be officially recognized as an e-Invoice in Malaysia, businesses must use XML or JSON—other formats will not be accepted for submission under the e-Invoicing framework.

LHDN has announced a phased implementation, starting with companies that have an annual revenue above RM100 million, and eventually covering all businesses across all industries. The timeline is tight, and non-compliance could lead to penalties and disruptions in business operations.
